Loss of Truss(t)! Probate fee climb down!

The sharp hike in probate fees proposed by Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor Liz Truss has been cancelled.

The changes would have seen fees payable to the government for a Grant of Probate rise from the current £155 up to as much as £20,000.

The plan had been widely attacked as a tax on death and there was a question mark over whether Liz Truss had the power to make the change herself without parliamentary approval.

Opposition from a combination of lawyers, MPs and peers appears to have caused the rethink although the government says that it is the lack of time before the forthcoming election which has brought about what seems to be another U-turn.

Asked about the government's post-election intentions the answer was non-committal.
