New guidance on age discrimination published

Acas has published new guidance on age discrimination which can be found here.

The guidance clarifies the position surrounding age discrimination and offers guidance to employers on how to avoid this.
Specifically, the guidance offers advice on action to prevent age discrimination in the workplace environment. Examples are also provided as to the forms of discrimination that may take place and puts forward different methods of dealing with cases of age discrimination.
Legal requirements are also highlighted in the guidance together with suggestions of good practice measures which can be implemented to supplement these.

It is interesting to note that a report published by the Women and Equalities Committee on 17 July 2018 – Older people and employment found that:

  • The country faces acute challenges recruiting and retaining an experienced, skilled workforce.
  • The country is wasting the talents of more than one million people aged over 50 who are out of work but would be willing to work if the right opportunity arose.
  • Age discrimination is the “root cause” of this problem.
